Edith M. Hopkins Schauer, 89, a resident of Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center, died there Monday, Aug. 30, 2004.

She was born Sept. 16, 1914 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Oscar and Lottie Bliss Hopkins. She had lived most of her life in Erie and was a former resident of 1752 E. 43rd St.

She was a homemaker and formerly worked as head cook for several families, including those of Skinner Engine Co. owner Herman Mueller and industrialist F.F. Curtze. She also worked in the interior decorating industry and retired as a home interior designer for W.T. Grant Co. after 20 years.

She appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on Nov. 17, 1934 as one of the "Campbell Kids" as drawn by Eugene Iverd.

As a 1932 graduate of Academy High School, she attended elderhostel programs at Edinboro University and Frostburg (Md.) State University.

As a member of Lawrence Park Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Wesleyville Keenagers.

She enjoyed art, music, watching birds and collecting antiques.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George J. Schauer, whom she married Apr. 16, 1938, and who died in 1987; and four brothers, Orville, Ellsworth, Neale and Marlin Hopkins.

Survivors include two sons, George H. Schauer and his wife Sara of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joseph H. Schauer and his wife Nellie Mae of Clayton, N.Y.; two sisters, Shirley Guelcher of Erie and Ruth Collett of Cypress, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
