Obituary published in The Edmonton Journal (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), 15 Feb 2007:
NIX, Amy Esther (Nancy) Nix (nee Beeching) Died peacefully on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Amy Esther Nix was born on February 18, 1920, in Greensville, Ontario, and was raised in West Flamborough, the third of ten children, to Jack and Gertrude Beeching. She grew up in an affectionate family. After high school Amy entered nursing training at the Hamilton General Hospital, and it was there that she met Nelson Nix, an intern from Edmonton, Alberta. Amy and Nelson were married on June 27, 1942. They moved immediately to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Nelson was stationed as a captain and later a major in the Canadian Army. When Nelson was sent overseas as an army doctor in 1944, Amy spent a few months at home in Ontario before moving west to Edmonton with their infant daughter. In Edmonton, Amy and Nelson made their home, raising four daughters and two sons. While Nelson built his medical practice, Amy was active in church and community work. Amy taught Sunday school, led the Explorer group and the United Church Women at Wesley United Church (and later Robertson Wesley United Church). She was also active in her P.E.O. group (Chapter D), as well as at Bissell Centre and on the board that built Friendship House, a senior citizen's home for homeless people. Amy was a constant reader who loved nothing better than to be surrounded by her family. She made a study of her children's interests and kept a hopeful and intelligent eye on the world around her. Amy always enjoyed a good laugh and a clever turn of phrase. Even after a stroke in 2004, she was glad to engage in conversation about the philosophy of raising children and other topics. Her one regret was not being able to care for Nelson until the end, but in her way, with her gentle personality and a warm hand to hold, she did even that. She will be dearly missed. Amy is survived by her husband and her children. She will be fondly remembered by her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her remaining siblings. The Memorial Service will be held at Robertson Wesley United Church on Saturday, February 17, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Amy's name to Bissell Centre, 10527 - 96th Street, Edmonton, AB, T5H 2H6.
