Sept. 23, 1915 — May 13, 2009
MONTROSE — Harry B. Hawks, 93, a life long resident of Montrose, peacefully went to meet his Lord on Wednesday morning May 13, 2009 at San Juan Nursing home following an extended illness.
Harry (Babe) Hawks was born Sept. 23, 1915 in Montrose, Colo. to William Roy and Mary Blanche (Woods) Hawks. The youngest of six children, everyone called him (Babe). That nickname followed him all his life. Harry grew up in Montrose and graduated from Montrose County High School in 1934.
Harry married Ethel Rose Allies of Montrose, in Grand Junction on Nov. 22, 1938. They made Montrose their lifelong home. One son, Richard, was born of this marriage. Ethel preceded Harry in death Feb. 9, 1991.
On May 11, 1994, Harry married Grace Morain in Montrose, Colo. where they resided until his death.
He was a member and Elder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Montrose since 1953.
Harry, like all the Hawks' family, wanted to be his own boss. He had several business ventures in the Montrose and Olathe areas. Harry always liked trucks and trucking and in the 1940's he bought his first PUC Authority and started his trucking business known as Hawks Express. He bought Wilson Transport business of Olathe and began hauling petroleum products for the Montrose, Olathe and Delta Co-op. He broadened his trucking business to include hauling of lumber, flat bed work and propane products in and around Montrose, from Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico.
Beginning in 1958, he obtained several U.S. Mail contracts hauling mail from Denver to Montrose, Grand Junction, Telluride, Nucla, Naturita, Paradox and various other points in Colorado. During this time he began hauling mail from Grand Junction to Montrose which is still being transported today with the help of his great-nephew, Dan Hawks, and Danny's son, Michael Hawks.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; one son, Richard and wife Ruby Hawks of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren, Allan and Rebecca of Montrose, Richard Jr. and Jessica and Paula Sandacker of Spokane, Wash.; five stepchildren, Beverly McMillian, Ronald Morain, Kenny Morain, Jerry Morain and Vickie Thome; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson all of Spokane, Wash. Two sisters-in-law, Clara and Trilby Hawks, also survive him along with eight nephews and three nieces, Christine Fulton, Raymond, Sam, Levi, Delbert, Johnnie, David Hawks and Peggy Williams and Patsy Denham and their families; also very special friends Donnie and Cheryl Seevers, who spent countless hours helping Harry.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William R. and Mary Blanche Hawks; four brothers, Roy, Milton, John and Vernon; one sister, Blanche Daugherty; one nephew, Buddy Daugherty; and one niece, Marjorie Daugherty.
Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Montrose on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Grand View Cemetery.
