Charles V. Gist
The town and community have lost another esteemed citizen in the passing of Charles Vincent Gist. He was a longtime resident and operated the hotel here for many years. Many traveling salesmen made it a point to reach the Gist hotel for the night's lodging due to the hospitality and good meals that were served by Mr and Mrs Gist. A few years ago they sold the hotel and bot the Mrs Josie Gist property where they have made their home. Mr Gist passed away shortly after midnight Thursday at the home. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday, Dec. 5, 1948 at 2:00 P.M., with the Rev. T. H. Norris officiating. Interment was in Gardner cemetery. Survivors include the faithful wife Susie, one son, Ora of Temple, Arizona; one granddaughter, Barbara Gist of Coldwater, Michigan. Two sons Neil and Dr. Lem Gist, had preceded their father in death several years ago. The Hathaway Funeral Home was in charge of the service. It can truly be said "Uncle Charley" was a good man and helpful neighbor and the world is better by his having lived in it. Besides the many friends that were with Mrs. Gist during the passing of her husband were these relatives: Mr and Mrs J. H. Echor, grand niece, Mrs. Rosa Turner, niece of Mrs Gist all of Oklahoma City; Mrs T. A. Gray, Batesville, Arkansas niece of Mrs. Gist; Mrs W. C. Malone, San Pedro, Calif., grandniece of Mrs Gist; Noel P. Gist, nephew, Columbia, Mo.; Ben Gist of Springfield; Mr and Mrs Walter Gist and son of Bolivar; Mrs Len Shipley and son of Memphis, Tenn., sister of Mr Gist.
