Wallace Carl Anderson "Wally", age 79, of Portage, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2002. He was born in Frazee, MN and raised in Swea City, IA. A 1940 high school graduate and a Mankato Conmmercial College graduate. He served 3 years in the 870th Artillery of the 66th Black Panther Division in France and Germany during World War II. He married Astrid Nordin in 1946 and lived in Fairmont, MN for 7 years, then settled in Portage. Wallace sang with the Tune Twisters male quartet over Radio Station KSUM in Minnesota for years. The couple raised two daughters, Linnea (Duane) Leatherman of Indianapolis and Cynthia Anderson of Phoenix, AZ (deceased). He is survived by his wife, Astrid, a sister, Phyllis (Gordon) Gilson of Alamosa, CO and a brother, Maurice (Glenna) Anderson of Iowa City, IA. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Jennifer Stankovic and Rachel (Michael) Brown, both of Houston, TX and one great-grandson, Michael Ross Brown, also of Houston. Wallace was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Portage, where he served on the Board of Trustees and as frequent tenor soloist in the church choir, building on plenty of experience, having sung with the Army Chorus. He was a member of American Legion Post #260 and VFW Post #9323, and a retired employee of United States Steel (Gary Works) where he worked as an instrument repairman, and retired with a perfect attendance record after 32 years.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Portage, 5051 Central Ave., Portage, with Rev. Steve Peterson officiating. Burial will follow with a brief graveside service and military honors at Blake Cemetery, Portage. Visitation will be on Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage, with American Legion Post #260 service at 7:00 P.M.
