NICHOLAS BERESFORD THOMPSON was born April 5, 1984, near Philadelphia, PA. He moved with his parents, Andrew and Elizabeth (Beresford) Thompson, to Illinois in 1852. His marriage to Mary Ann Maycroft took place in Lisbon, IL on March 8, 1868.

The couple farmed in Illinois and in 1876 departed for Waterville with Nick's father, two brothers (James A. and Frederick E.) and their families. Nick's deceased sister Mary Jane's two daughters, Lillian and Abigail Winterbottom, also accompanied the group.

In Waterville, Nick entered the music business where he sold organs and Lyon & Healey pianos. He became an agent for the State Insurance Company. At the time of his death on November 19, 1895, he was in the real estate and loan business.

Nick and his family regularly attended the Lutheran Church in Waterville. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the A.O.U.W. (Ancient Order of United Workers) Lodge. In 1877 he was elected councilman and became Mayor of Waterville in 1878. Mary Ann was a member of the Eastern Star.

Nick and Mary Ann had one son, James William. Three years after Nick died, Mary married Henry Talbot, Nick's partner in the loan business.
