Son of James Jayne and Phebe Ann Ackerly, husband of Jennie L. Swezey, whom he married on May 5, 1882, and father of Edward Forest, Clarence, I., Walter L., Lila B. (married William Everett Sweezey), and Mildred Jayne (married Marcus Haley, married Frederick Conrad Strier).

In 1860, Forest Jayne, aged 1, was shown living in Islip, NY, with his father, James Jayne, aged 25, a bayman, and Julia Jayne, aged 24.

In 1865, Forest L. Jayne, aged 6, could be found living in Brookhaven, NY with parents, James A. Jayne, aged 48, and Phebe A. Jayne, aged 33, and siblings, Lizzie W. Jayne, aged 4, and Bertha Jayne, aged 1 month. His father, James, was shown to be a bayman.

In 1880, Forrest Jane, aged 21, was living in Brookhaven, NY, with stepfather, James F. Ryder, aged 60, a fisherman, and his mother, Phebe A. Ryder, aged 50, and stepsister, Emma Ryder, aged 7. Forrest was shown to be a bayman.

In 1900, Forest Jayne, aged 41, could be found living in Brookhaven, NY with wife Jennie, aged 37, and children Edward F., 16, Walter L., 13, and Lilia B. Jayne, aged 4. Forest was shown to be employed at the U.S. Life Saving Station.

June 24, 1901 - The Long Island Railroad Company has paid Forrest Jayne, son of Phoebe Ann Ryder, who was killed at the Conklin Avenue crossing of the railroad about two months ago, a check for $200 to defray the funeral expenses. The railroad company was exonerated from blame in the accident by the coroner, it being shown that there was contributory negligence on the part of the deceased.

In 1902, Capt. Forrest Jayne was shown captaining the sloop Maybelle in the Great South Bay about a mile from the Mascot dock, during a squall that overturned the boat, throwing all occupants into the water. The accident was seen from the shore and several boats came to their aid. All were rescued, with no injuries or casualties.

In 1902, Forrest L. Jayne sold his property on Grove Avenue to Annie M. Swezey.

On February 22, 1917, Forrest Lemnel Jayne, aged 58 years, 7 months, was shown serving at Coast Guard Station 79 as a surfman.

Obituary - Captain Forrest L. Jayne, 72 years old, died Friday at his home, 11 Swezey Street, where he had been ill for several days. He was born in Bellport and had spent his entire life in this section. For 31 years he was a member of the Coast Guard and was stationed at the Bellport and Blue Point stations during that period. On his retirement from the service, he operated a ferry service during the summer between Brookhaven and Smith's Point and was known to hundreds of people in this section. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Jennie Jayne, two daughters, Mrs. Lila Swezey, and Mrs. Mildred Haley of Brookhaven, and two sons, Walter and Edward. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Norman A. Hall of the Methodist church officiating, with interment in Cedar Grove cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.
