Titanic Victim

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Bess married Hudson Joshua Creigton Allison, a wealthy Montreal stockbroker, on December 18, 1907, against her parents' wishes. She was a devout Methodist and Sunday School teacher. She boarded the Titanic as a first class passenger along with her husband; daughter Loraine and her nursemaid Sarah Daniels; son Trevor and his nursemaid Alice Cleaver; their cook Mildrid Brown; and their chauffeur George Swane - who traveled second class. On the last night of her life, Bess and Hudson had dinner with Major Peuchen and Harry Molson. Bess had brought Loraine briefly into the Jacobean dining room so she could see how pretty it was. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, Alice Cleaver took Trevor and left with him in Lifeboat 11, unbeknown to Bess. Bess was forcibly put in a boat with Loraine, but refused to leave the ship without her baby, Trevor. She dragged Loraine out of the boat and started searching for Alice and Trevor. Major Peuchen, a survivor, told the newspaper, "Somebody told her Mr. Allison was in a boat being lowered on the opposite side of the deck, and with her little daughter she rushed away from the boat. Apparently she reached the other side to find that Mr. Allison was not there. Meanwhile, our boat had put off." Bess, Hudson and Loraine perished in the disaster. Trevor survived. Bess' body was never recovered.

This monument at Maple Ridge Cemetery is commemorative only; Bessie is not buried there. Her body was lost at sea in the Titanic disaster.
