The Canadian Brigade serving with NATO was garrisoned in the British occupied zone of Germany, thus coming under the command of the British Army of the Rhine. And so the British Military Cemetery in Hannover became the last resting place for 85 post war Canadian military and for 67 Canadian dependant wives and children who died while living in Hannover. In addition, prior to the establishment of a Canadian Section in the Werl Cemetery, post war military and dependants from the Werl area were buried in Hannover.
