On 5 Aug 1863, Thomas H. Roland, enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a coal heaver on board the USS Alleghany and was transferred to the USS Nansemond at the end of that month.

At the time of his enlistment, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion, brown eyes, and black hair. He was a blacksmith.

On 7 Jan 1864, Thomas was promoted to Fireman 2nd Class; and in Aug 1864 to Fireman 1st Class. He was mustered out on 7 Aug 1864 at Norfolk, Virginia.

In April 1891, he applied for a Navy Survivors' Pension and received certificate number 20222, for his as a 1st Class Fireman aboard the USS Nansemond.
