Jesse Eugene Sipe (Sonny), 76, of Elkton, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital with his family at his side.



He was born July 30, 1935, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Jesse S. and Mary Ellen Robinson Sipe.

Sonny graduated from Elkton High School in 1953 and served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959 aboard the USS Lake Champlain. He retired from Reynolds Metals Co. in 1993 after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Junior Order in Elkton.

On April 18, 1958, he married the former Frances Louise Davis, who survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda Sipe Barb and her husband, Russ, of Buena Vista, Sharon F. Sipe of Massanutten; one son, Steven E. Sipe of Massanutten; and four grandchildren, Tim and Karyn Barb and Andrew and Hannah Sipe.

Also dear to his heart were his many friends, neighbors and relatives, including special cousins, Jackie Hensley, Peggy and A. Junior Hedrick, Larry (Buster) and Lee Hensley, Janice and Clay Spitzer, Murphy (Fred) Hensley, and Mary Jo Halstead and Philip Morrissey.

An avid and loyal fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Sonny enjoyed many outdoor activities, including fishing, gardening, caring for his horses, riding his motorcycle and working in his garage. He loved to read and enjoyed spending time in God's Word. His most treasured and favorite times were spent with his beloved wife of 53 years, Fran.

Sonny, a faithful and devoted husband, father and grandfather, loved his family and was always there for them. His grandchildren meant the world to him and he leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories for them to cherish. Dearly loved and missed by his family, he will forever be in their hearts.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at 11 a.m., also at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, with the Rev. Robert W. Smith Jr., the Rev. Gerald Meeks and the Rev. Russ Barb officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville with military rites by the Gooden Brothers Post 9292.
