Called to active duty in June of 1943, Ralph served in the South Pacific until January, 1946. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 1947, he was a teacher in Burlington, Iowa until recalled to active duty for the Korean conflict, stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia. After a year on the Biology Faculty of Wartburg Lutheran College in Waverly, Iowa, Ralph entered the University of Iowa Dental School, graduating in 1956. The move to Seattle came in 1956 to serve a Dental Internship in the U.S. Public Health Hospital. Upon its completion, he entered the University of Washington Dental School for graduate study in the Department of Pedodontics, now known as Pediatric Dentistry , where he was a clinical instructor, receiving a Post Graduate Degree in 1959.
During his entire professional career, Ralph gave generously of his time to the Department of Pedodontics, the Ryther Children's Clinic, and for over 15 years volunteered at the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic in Seattle. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, Ham Radio enthusiast and a long-time Husky Football season ticket holder. Upon leaving the practice of dentistry in 1976 after a time in association with Dr. Wendy Spektor, he intended to "go fishin' full time!" His was a splendid journey.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, Dr. Schumacher is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children, Charles R. (Dianna), David E. (Paulette Evans), Kim Miller (Karim), and Charles F. Kouba; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; and brother, Donald P. Schumacher, MD (Roma Jean) and family.
Donations may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or the University of Washington, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Law/Lewis Fund.
