He was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Anna Martha Pearl Dausener and Erwin Manstedt Schumacher. Following graduation from Parkersburg High School in 1939, he worked in the family grocery store. After a time at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserve.

Called to active duty in June of 1943, Ralph served in the South Pacific until January, 1946. After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 1947, he was a teacher in Burlington, Iowa until recalled to active duty for the Korean conflict, stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia. After a year on the Biology Faculty of Wartburg Lutheran College in Waverly, Iowa, Ralph entered the University of Iowa Dental School, graduating in 1956.
