My grandmother was the oldest of six children of Carey and Leila Martin from Chilton County, Alabama. Her father died at the age of 49 while she was attending Howard College in Birmingham. As a result she had to quit school and teach school at Thorsby Jr. High School to help support the family. In the late 1920's she met my grandfather, Herbert Adams, on a trip to Birmingham where my grandfather was living at the time and working for Tennessee Coal & Iron. They married in 1931 in Thorsby and moved back to Black Creek Community in Etowah County to live. There they raised their only son Euell Martin Adams.
