1Lt. Donovan was wounded in action while serving with the 24th Marine Regiment of the 4th Marine Division on Saipan.He was evacuated to a hospital ship but eventually succumbed to his wounds. He was buried at sea with all military honors and is listed on the tablets of the missing Honolulu Memorial, Hawaii, 1st/Lt. James R. Donovan This memorial is a cenotaph.
Footnote: A daughter, Miss Margaret Ann, would be born to Lt. James & Mrs. Helen Donovan at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria on Sunday night, August 14, 1944.
