Father Raphael was born in Savannah, Georgia, on November 7, 1884. After graduation from Cathedral School in Savannah, he attended Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington, DC. He applied as a candidate for the Commissariat of the Holy Land, and Godfrey Schilling recommended he go to St. Bonaventure College. He graduated from St. Bonaventure College, and entered the novitiate in Patterson on August 31, 1905. He professed his temporary vows on September 3, 1906, and made his profession of solemn vows on September 8, 1909. Raphael was ordained to the priesthood in Newark Cathedral on June 10, 1911. Thirty-three years of his priesthood were spent at the Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, of which he was Rector for almost twenty-five years. Raphael built the magnificent graystone romanesque chapel and the gymnasium. As teacher, accomplished musician, Pastor of Pond Eddy, Guardian of the friary, he was beloved by priests, people and students. Raphael had the tenderness of a mother, the discipline of a father, and he often consoled homesick freshman with his story about a 16 year old boy who left his home in Georgia to study for the priesthood in Washington years earlier. Raphael served as a Councilor of Holy Name Province, and held the office of Custos from 1934 to 1937. After enduring a long illness with great patience, he died in Saint Clare's Hospital in New York City on his 62'nd birthday, November 7, 1946. He was a professed friar for 40 years and a priest for 35 years. He was the uncle of Patrick Adams.
