Her maiden name is taken from her obituary in the News-Star, May 10, 1937.

Her obituary and Death Certificate states she was the daughter of Richard and Josephine (Swayze) Yancey of Jonesville and the wife of Dr. E.R. Yancy. She was born in Jonesville and came to Monroe in 1923. She was a prominent member of Grace Episcopal church, a member of the King's Daughters and a member of the Review Book club.

Josephine was survived by her husband, son Cyril and two brothers: Clarence and Fred Yancey.
