FRED J. BERNHARDT

Fred J. Bernhardt, 73, Mounted Route 21 (Town of Manitowoc Rapids), died Saturday
morning at Memorial Hospital Manitowoc, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley Methodist Church, Manitowoc.
The Rev. Donald T. Stannard will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery,
Manitowoc.
Mr. Bernhardt was born March 1, 1886, in the Town of Mishicot, son of the late Otto
and Mary Scharff Bernhardt. He attended Mishicot graded school and later attended
an engineering school at Hamburg, N.D., where he met and married the former Leno
Pforr in 1911. After his marriage he moved to Matchwood, Mich., where he ran the
Lindstedt-Hoffman farm for two years before returning to Manitowoc County. He was
a school director of the old Goodwin School for 25 years and was director of the
Two Rivers Shipping Assn. for 25 years. He was also a member of the Church Council
of Wesley Methodist Church for many years. His wife died in 1920 and in 1921 he
married the former Hilda Stuebs in Manitowoc. A daughter also preceded him in
death.
Surviving are the wife; four sons, Harold of Manitowoc, Clarence of Forest Junction,
Fred W. of Racine and Robert on the home farm; a daughter, Miss Bernice Bernhardt
of Manitowoc; four brothers, Emil of Sheboygan Falls, William of Mishicot, the Rev.
Hugo of Marion Wis., and the Rev. Otto of Eldorado, Kas., and 11 grandchildren.
Friends may call at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 2 p.m. Monday
until 10:30 a.m., Tuesday when the body will be moved to the church to lie in state
until the time of service.
