James was the youngest child of Moses & Mary Irvin Thompson. James married Mary Jane "Jennie" Irvin Shaw of Curwensville on October 15, 1890. They lived in a large house across Thompson Run from the Centre Furnace Mansion. It is still there today, serving as the office for Dante's Restaurants. After the death of James' father, he shared responsibility for several farms that were left jointly to himself and William Thompson, his older brother. James was an insurance agent.
