At sixteen years of age, Forrester became a teacher in a Seminary in New York. He later moved onto a mercantile career. Rejected to the Civil War because of a physical disability, he moved to Los Angeles, in 1885 and became involved in real estate. He built Westlake Park and also donated money to the city of Los Angeles for the contruction of parks. From 1889 to 1899 he served as president of the Young Men's Christian Association and helped build the building for the organization.
