Forced to leave his native country of Germany because of involvement with political radicals, he fled to Paris. He was forced to leave Paris and flee to Basel, Switzerland, where he taught at the University of Basil. He was forced to leave Basel because of radical views so he emigrated to the United States. He was ordained a Unitarian minister in Lexington, Massachusetts where he designed and served as minister of the Follen Community Church. He taught German at Harvard University until forced to leave Harvard because of his abolitionist views.
