Hyche, an on-duty officer with the Ontario Police Department was shot and killed when he was ambushed by a man with a rifle. An off duty officer had spotted the man, who was wanted for murder, walking along I-10. When backup officers arrived they came under fire from the man who had made it to an apartment complex. When Officer Hyche arrived on the scene he stopped to ask a grounds person for information. As he was doing so the man shot him from the corner of one of the buildings.
The murderer, Steven Michael Miller,23 took refuge in the apartment building, Ontario police had Miller's sister talk him into surrendering.

Miller had earlier taken part in the robbery and murder of a vintage auto dealer named Edwin Huntsman. Miller and his younger brother, Jerry,20,met at the Pepper Tree Motel in Ontario. They killed Huntsman for $3100 he had on him from the sale of a car.
