A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis and mustered into state service there July 2 as a private with Co. I, 50th Pennsylvania Militia. He presumably honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1863, (unconfirmed but likely) but died from typhoid fever at Town Hall U.S. Hospital in Chambersburg.

Henry was a teacher in civilian life.
