Lucien G. Berry Jr.

Lucien G. Berry Jr., of Clarksville, died April 4, 2008, at Howard County General Hospital. He was 85.

Born April 8, 1922, in Washington, D.C., to Zell and Lucien G. Berry Sr., he attended Washington and Lee High School.

Mr. Berry joined the United States Coast Guard in 1941 and was stationed at Curtis Bay, Baltimore, where he enrolled in their radio school.

He married Louise Hammill in 1942.

During World War II, he was in the Atlantic and Pacific serving on a destroyer escort DE 284 as a radio man for almost four years.

He received the rank of Chief Petty Officer at the culmination of his duties.

He moved to McLean, Va., where he went to work for the United States government in Arlington.

He retired from the National Security Agency in the mid-1970s, where he had worked as a data systems analyst.

Mr. Berry was instrumental in procuring the very first transistor computers for NSA, according to family members.

He enjoyed freestyle archery shooting and was Virginia State Free Style Champion for three consecutive years between 1955 and 1957. He belonged to the Virginia Bow Hunters Association and the National Archery Association.

"Luke," as he was known to friends, also raised orchids at his home greenhouse and had many dozens of beautiful plants. He was also a member of the Orchid Society of Maryland.

Mr. Berry was one of the founding members of the Goldenairs Orchestra in Columbia, playing the tenor four-string banjo. He also played for years in a small band called the Goodtimers.

He also enjoyed fishing and loved to fish in the Florida Keys, where he and his wife went each winter for 25 years.

He is predeceased by his daughter, Donna Lee Berry; his wife, Louise Virginia Berry; and a brother, David Noel Berry.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and David Scaggs, of Scaggsville; a granddaughter and her husband, Gena and J.B. McNichol, of Glenville, Pa.; a great-granddaughter, Bryce McNichol also of Glenville; a grandson, Burt Thurman, his wife, Olivia and their two daughters, Taylor and Haley, all of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.; and a sister, Genevieve Atkinson, of McDonough, Ga.

Funeral services were held at Witzke Funeral Home, in Ellicott City, April 7, 2008.

Interment followed at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville.
