U.S. Congressman. Immigrating with his parents to the United States in 1888, he later graduated from the Illinois State Normal University. He was teacher and principal of schools at Oglesby, Illinois (1902-05), was superintendent of schools (1908-36), city commissioner of Oglesby (1918-26) and a member of the Illinois State Normal School Board (1926-30). He also served in the Illinois State Senate (1930-36). In 1937, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until 1963. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death.
