Leonard Gervase "Bud" Bonnett born on December 17, 1926 in Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, North Dakota, the son of Leonard Joseph Bonnett (1888–1971) and Josephine Ann (Marchildon) Bonnett (1896–1992) of Saint Paul, Minnesota.

He grew up in Saint Paul and graduated from Cretin Military Academy, then attended the College of Saint Thomas. He also served in the US Army Air Force during World War II.

In the late 1940s he went to work for his uncle George Edward FitzGerald in Sidney, Richland County, Montana, and it was while there that he met Mary Lee Gardner (1930–2003), the daughter of Kenneth Harris 'Ken" Gardner (1907–1999) and his wife Mildred Isabelle (Collins) Gardner (1908–1984). They were married on June 24, 1950 at the Catholic parish in Fairview. They were later separated and eventually divorced in 1965.

Right after their marriage, Bud and Mary lived for a short time in Saint Paul, Minnesota, before moving back to Fairview, where Bud taught in a rural school about 10 miles from the town. While in Montana he also worked as a salesman for Fuller Brush and also sold tires for Goodyear Company.

The family lived in Fairview for some years before they built a home southwest of town, across the highway from his in-laws.

In February 1958 the family moved to Southern California, living first in Lynwood, then LaMirada in Los Angeles County, before finally settling in Anaheim in Orange County.

Bud joined Occidental Life Insurance Company in downtown Los Angeles in 1959 as a school group service representative and 2 years later was named senior group service representative in Los Angeles. In early 1963 he moved up to special case group service manager and was assigned the California Teachers Association account, which he handled until his death in 1973.
