Elvis Ashcraft Dies of Rifle Wound in Head
Theories of Accident and Murder Considered in Investigation of Tragedy Near
Monte Vista, Colo
(Correspondence to The Tribune)
MAPLETON, Nov. 2--Ray Odell, now located at Monte Vista, Colo., sends the
following clipping from the Monte Vista Journal Issued October 23, which is of
interest to many Mapleton people who were well acquainted with the deceased, a
former resident south of town:
"Shot through the head with a high-powered rifle, Elvis "Mickey" Ashcraft, 30,
son of Frank Ashcraft of this city, was instantly killed some time Friday as he
sat beside a dead tree while hunting deer in the Indian Creek area.
"The body of the young man was found Saturday noon by a party of searchers
after he had been reported missing Friday night. In company with a friend,
Ashcraft, who was employed by the state inspection service, left Ft. Garland
Friday morning to hunt deer in the mountains east of the fort.
"Officers are considering all possible clues to determine if death was
deliberate or accidental. The bullet, which was buried deep in his brain, is
being studied by a Denver ballistics expert in an attempt to establish
identification of the weapon from which it was fired. Five rifles were taken
from men known to have been hunting in the vicinity Friday. However, only one
weapon was of similar caliber to that of the bullet.
"One theory was that Ashcraft was deliberately murdered by enemies of William
Krepps, game warden who was in that country Friday. The two men wore identical
clothing that day."
