Husband of Beatrice and father of Cecil B. and William de Mille, Henry's father fought for South in the Civil War. Henry graduated from Columbia College in 1875 and taught school for 7 years. Henry worked as a play reader for the Madison Square Theatre. At that time he met David Belasco and together the two produced a handful of stage melodramas-
written by de Mille and directed by Belasco. For Broadway, de Mille wrote: The Main Line, The Wife, Lord Chumley,The Charity Ball and Men and Women which starred Maude Adams.
