Carol Lee Blangsted, formerly of Downingtown (PA)

Carol Lee was born to Charles Bruton, M.D. and Louise Bruton in Philadelphia, on November 28, 1938. She passed away on June 23, 2012.

She was raised in Downingtown. Her siblings are Charles (Bud) Bruton and Jennifer Bruton.

She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Bob.

Carol Lee graduated from Kutztown State University in Pennsylvania, majoring in art education. After graduation, she taught art to elementary school students for two years.

Changing careers, she worked for a large insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1969, she was offered a transfer to the Los Angeles office, which she accepted. She drove across the country in her tiny Triumph Spitfire.

In 1971, Carol Lee met her future husband, Erik Blangsted. They were married in 1972, and two years later, daughter Laura was born. In 1979, they moved, with Erik's son Brian, to the Oakland Hills.

Once Laura started elementary school at Joaquin Miller School, Carol Lee began volunteering in the school library. Later, she became the school librarian, and managed the library for some 18 years.

In addition to painting pictures, Carol Lee discovered the joys of making and displaying quilts. After a while, painting was left behind, and Carol Lee became a dedicated art quilter. Until recently, Carol Lee taught quilting classes at the New Pieces Quilt shop in Berkeley. Carol Lee and Laura also enjoyed working together to create quilts for the babies of their family and friends. Those quilts are all over the world now.

Carol Lee dealt with cancer and all of the difficult side effects for more than four years. She was fortunate to have had the loving support of so many friends over this time.

A Celebration of Life service was held July 3, at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. Carol Lee was a remarkable woman who will be deeply missed.
