Around 1889, Oscar and his parents moved to California following his grandmother, Julia who had moved there in the Fall of 1882. By 1905 they had settled in Santa Cruz where his parents established the Hedgpeth Sanatorium.
By 1910 he had moved his family to San Luis Obispo and was working as a salesman for a grocery store. Oscar remained in the San Luis Obispo area until the time of his death in 1944.
