Community Leader Mary S. Martin dies
Mrs. Mary Stigall Martin, 84, of 607 Watt Street, Martinsville, died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Born Feb. 20, 1906, in Patrick County, she was a daughter of the late John A. Stigall and the late Mary Elizabeth Dillon Stigall. She was the widow of Robert Cutler Martin.
Mrs. Martin worked in sales for many years at Leggett and Globman's department stores, and Lloyd's Jewelry and V.P. Rimmer's Jewelry.
A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Martinsville, she taught Sunday school for 12 years, and served as president and secretary of her class. She also was active in the Circle and WMU, and had served as president of the Women's Missionary Society. She was twice named Mother of the Year.
She was a member of the Christian Women's Club of Martinsville and Henry County, a member and past president of the Martinsville Women's Christian Temperance Union and a member of Aglow.
A strong supporter of mental health, she was instrumental in forming CONTACT, was chairman of its dedication and opening ceremonies and served on the board of the organization.
She was past president and active member of the Martinsville Business and Professional Women's Club; a member and twice president of the Fairview Garden Club, and secretary to the Martinsville Council of Garden Clubs.
Mrs. Martin served as secretary of the Cancer Fund for three years, secretary of the Heart Fund for four years, and also served on the Human Values Committee in the city.
She was active in the Martinsville Homemakers Club, and for 10 years worked with the Snack Bar at Martinsville General Hospital.
She was a Red Cross Volunteer at the VA Hospital in Salem. Mrs. Martin became a Gray Lady at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
During World War II she was a member of the U. S. Air Force Air Defense Command.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Davis E. (Georgia Lee) Lee of Martinsville and Christine M. Bennett of Martinsville; two sons, Robert C. Martin, Jr. of Ridgeway, and W. Donald Martin of Martinsville, nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday from First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Dr. James E. Baucom officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at McKee Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and other times at the home of a daughter, Christine Bennett, 807 Mulberry Road.
