Emma, Edward,Hertz and Rebecca were coming to America on a British liner called the Athenia in September, 1939 when it was struck with a torpedo by a U2 German submarine only hours after Great Britain declared war on Germany. Hertz and Rebecca were never recovered, and presumed drowned.
All the pictures of Emma on this site were taken after the rescue ship brought Emma and Edward to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The sadness is very evident in the pictures, and continued on for the next 10 years until her death.
