Caroline W. Oelkers' first marriage was to Alfred Melvin Johnson (3/1/1888-4/28/1910) on 4/7/1910, exactly three weeks before his death. Alfred (a laborer) and Caroline lived in Red Wing for that brief time and appeared as a couple in the 1910 U.S. census as it was taken on April 25 in their vicinity (no children nor anyone else were residing with them). Caroline then married Leonard Matthew McGovern (12/5/1884-8/23/1942) on 7/29/1913 in Goodhue County. As of the 1920 census they were living at 726 Plum Street in Red Wing, Minnesota, along with Caroline's niece Hilma Opsal (later Mrs. Alvin C. Budd, Sr.). In the 1930 census Caroline and Leonard were living by themselves at 4403 Gladwin Avenue in Detroit, Michigan; and in the 1940 census they were also living by themselves at 3600 Maryland in Detroit. The McGoverns do not appear to have had any children.

Following Leonard's death, Caroline moved to Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio, to live with her niece Hilma (nee Opsal) Budd (Mrs. Alvin C., Sr.), and appears with them in the 1950 census. Caroline died in Ohio and was buried back in Red Wing, Minnesota alongside Leonard.
