His military service involved two men whose names are well known in Haverhill: Timothy Bedel[l] and Ezekiel Ladd. John enlisted in Capt. Samuel Young’s company, Col. Timothy Bedel’s regiment on 31 Jan 1776, as the American Revolution broke out. The regiment was known to be in Canada on 1 May 1777. John transferred to Capt. Joseph Hutchins’ company from 18 Aug to 3 Oct 1777, which was stationed closer to home. It appears that he was paid by the Town of Haverhill for “scouting and supplies” during this time, in the amount of £1.5.4. He then rejoined Capt. Ezekiel Ladd's company, Col. Timothy Bedel’s regiment at the rank of Sergeant to defend “the frontiers on and adjacent to Connecticut River from 8 Apr 1778 until his detachment on 31 Mar 1779.
John and Esther’s seven children all appear to have born at Newbury, although the vital records are incomplete. They are Anna/b. ?, Mary a.k.a. Polly/b. 1787, John Jr./b. 1791, Triphena/b. ?, Ruth/b. 1794, Sarah/b. bet 1794 and 1797, and Eliphalet T/b. 1797. John died at Fort Covington, drawing a pension for his war service.
