Civil War: Company I, 7th California Infantry
Indian Wars: Company D, 23rd U.S. Infantry

Ransom Roscoe Staples was the son of John P. Staples (1813, ME) and Harriet Elizabeth Libby (1825, ME). Ransom appears as a resident at the home of his parents at Lebanon, York County, Maine, in the 1850 U.S. Census. His family relocated to California in the 1850's. During the Civil War Ransom enlisted as a private at Nevada City, California, November 12, 1864, and was mustered into Company I, 7th California Infantry, November 18. Private Staples was posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco March 31, 1866 (Orton, 792). After the war he went to Nevada County, California, where he appears as a registered voter in the 1867 Nevada County Great Register. Ransom was working as a laborer at Boston Ravine. The following year Ransom went to Sacramento and enlisted for three years as a private in the Regular Army November 27, 1868. He was mustered into Company D, 23rd U.S. Infantry. Private Staples appears on the roles as a deserter September 25, 1869, with no indication that he was ever discharged from the Army. Ransom went to Oregon in 1869 and married (1) Mary Emeline Butler at Hillsboro, Washington County, December 25, 1870. Ransom took his wife back to his former residence at Boston Ravine, Nevada County, California. He appears there as a registered voter in the 1871 and 1873 Nevada County Great Registers. By 1879 Ransom was a beekeeper living at San Juan Capistrano, then part of Los Angeles County, with his wife Mary and five children (1879, 1880, 1884 Los Angeles Great Registers; 1880 US Census). Ransom registered to vote September 1888 and indicated his profession as painter and his residence as Ontario (1888 Los Angeles Great Register). Ransom filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Chino, San Bernardino County, June 30, 1891, and received application No. 1,035,574 and certificate No. 993,733. He was a painter living at Chino with his wife Mary when he was first admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle September 4, 1891. Sometime soon thereafter Ransom and Mary apparently were divorced, since Mary married (2) Henry Edmund Berjiman at Chino on November 8, 1892. Ransom took a leave of absence from the Sawtelle Home in 1894 and went to El Cajon where he worked as a cook (1894 San Diego Great Register). By 1896 Ransom had returned to Chino (1896 San Bernardino Great Register). Sometime thereafter Ransom, claiming to be a widower, returned to the Sawtelle Home where he appears as a resident in the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census. Ransom took another leave of absence and returned to Chino in 1912. He returned to the veterans' home September 8, 1914, indicating at the time that he had been living with his son at Chino. After his return Ransom remained at the Sawtelle Home until he died.
