The son of Dr. William and Eliza Marchand Morris, at the age of 19 he learned the carpentry trade with Charles D. Turner of Uniontown and did this until 1864. He then engaged in farming in North Union on Redstone Creek. In 1887 he was elected county commissioner.
In 1851 he married Nancy J. Turner, daughter of James D. Turner, and had seven children: William, Eliza, Charles, Milton, Emily, Rush and James.
