Robert O'Neill Ford, was born and raised in Pennsylvania, first joined Co.H, 7th New York 30-day Militia Infantry at the outbreak of the Civil War in April, 1861. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on November 25, 1862 and was later promoted to First Lieutenant on February 6, 1864. Ford served for a time as part of the US Marine Guard aboard the USS Constellation, which is berthed at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD at this day. He resigned on April 6, 1868 taking effect April 30, 1868.
