Col. John A. Augustine, III U.S.A.F. (Ret.)
John A. Augustine, 93, of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Richmond, VA died on July 25, 2012. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, (B.S. in Civil Engineering) Class of 1940. His experiences at VMI shaped the rest of his life, and he was a lifelong enthusiastic supporter, becoming a generous benefactor of full athletic scholarships for many students, as well as a member of the school's prestigious Institute Society. As a pilot in the 22nd Bomb Group flying B-26 medium bombers, he and the rest of the 22nd Bomb Group immediately departed Langley Air Base, VA for California after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. After arriving in Hawaii, and their aircraft reassembled, the 22nd Bomb Group flew, island hopping, all the way across the Pacific Ocean to Australia. During the 1 1/2 years, he and his crew of B-26 "Strike" flew over 25 combat missions against the Japanese in Rabul and New Guinea. The 22nd Bomb Group also participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea. After World War II, he continued to serve as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force for the next 28 years. His post-war Air Force career included assignments in Alaska, Ohio, Arkansas, Washington, D.C. and Bern, Switzerland, where he served as the Air Force attaché to the U.S. Embassy there. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the next 15 years with John Hancock Life Insurance Company. During this time, he and his wife June were avid U.S. Master Swimmers at North Shore Aquatic Center and swam there for decades. He and June were also advanced SCUBA divers and had completed over 150 dives around the world. They were also world travelers, having visited every continent multiple times and enjoying a wide variety of cultural experiences. He and June moved to St. Petersburg and became parishioners of St. Raphael's Church in 1971. His wife, June H. Augustine, his four children, John A. Augustine IV, Katherine Johnson, Jean H. Augustine, William F. Augustine, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, survive him. John was a true southern gentleman, known for his charm, hospitality, quick wit and generosity. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
