On January 31, 1865 he was discharged from the 11th New Jersey, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company L, 1st Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, a regiment that had as it's Colonel John's older brother, Peter Stagg. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 7, 1865, Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 7 Mar 1865. On May 15, 1865 he was made Acting Assistant Adjutant General of the 1st Brigade, 1st Calvary Division, and served until he was honorably mustered out on March 10, 1866 at Salt Lake City, Utah.
He returned to Paterson after his service, resumed his printing career, and eventually became business manager of first the "Paterson Guardian", then the "Paterson Morning Call" newspapers. He became a fireman in 1868, and eventually rose to become Paterson's Fire Chief.
He married Catherine Fulton on November 5, 1868, with whom he had seven children.
