Obituary in The State, Columbia, SC, 22 Apr 2008: Lexington - A graveside service for Lucille Kearse Hiers, 87, will be held 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in Greenlawn Memorial Park, officiated by Rev. Fran Bragen. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Fred Laffoday, Robert Laffoday, Scott Laffoday, Edward Napier and great-grandsons, Lee Laffoday, Ben Milner and Jason Laffoday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Columbia, SC 29201. Thompson Funeral of West Columbia is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hiers, widow of Jacob Benjamin Hiers, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, in Providence Hospital. She was a resident of Presbyterian Home in Lexington. Born in Crocketville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Thompson Kearse and Maggie Lou Bishop Kearse. She worked in the nursing profession before marriage and later owned the Hiers Community Store in Beaufort. Mrs. Hiers also worked for the S.C. Employment Security Commission and retired from the University of South Carolina. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in many church circles. Mrs. Hiers spent time playing bridge and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. In her younger years, she was a homeroom mother and Girl Scout Troop leader. Surviving are her daughters, Dorothy M. Hiers and Mary H. Davis of Cayce; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hiers was preceded in death by sister, Gwendolyn K. Polk and brother, G. Warren Kearse.
