Walter Jean Duncan, 80, of Clinton passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, November 20, 2009, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.

Walt was born in Mansfield, Illinois on January 6, 1929 to Ernie Francis Duncan and Marie Ada Sloan. Walt was the youngest of 3 boys and 3 sisters who worked side by side with their parents on their family farm in the middle our country's Corn Belt. Later, as a grown man, Walt would reminisce about this time in his life. He would talk about the long hours of work on the farm, schoolwork at the local one-room school house and playing an occasional sandlot baseball game in the fields with his brothers, friends and his dog Bing (famed centerfielder and best friend).
After high school, Walt joined the armed forces and served our country as a medical core man in the US Navy. While stationed in San Francisco, the handsome sailor charmed a young beauty that caught his eye by offering to help her with her Chemistry homework. He was immediately smitten, agreed to go with her to a local school dance and before the night was through he fell in love with her. That night, he asked her to marry him while dancing to their favorite song, "How deep is the ocean". Three and one half years later, the war over, his bride's college obligation complete, Jean Helen Sundstrom and Walter Jean Duncan were married on September 30, 1950.
Following their marriage, Walt and Jean moved to Peoria, IL where Walt enrolled in school at Western Illinois University where he played on the school's basketball team and started the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. Walt later transferred to Bradley University finishing with honors while working fulltime for a local manufacturing company.
Upon graduation, Walt began his lifelong carrier with the Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a claims adjuster in the Peoria, Illinois office. Walt dedicated his life to his work, developing lasting friendships and the skills necessary for taking on increasing responsibilities throughout his career with the company. Walt moved his family from Peoria, IL to work for the Dade County Farm Bureau office in Miami Florida. A year later he was promoted to district claims manager in Gainesville, Fl. In 1968, Walt became the claims manager for the South Carolina Farm Bureau in Columbia, SC. In 1974, at the age of 55, Walt was asked to move to Mississippi to pursue a Law Degree and to head up the company's Legal Department. Three years later, while working full time, Walt received his Law Degree from Mississippi College Law School and finished 2nd in his graduating class. Walt finished his career with the Southern Farm Bureau Casualty Company as vice president-legal and secretary in 1994.
Walt was a man of strong faith and a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Clinton, MS. He served as a Bishop, Director of the Genealogy Department and Elder of the church and ministered to those in need throughout his life. Walt's love for the church and his belief in God was ever present in his life and an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Most of all, Walt was a family man. He loved his wife Jean and his children, grandchildren and great grandchild more than anything else in this world. His entire life was dedicated to them. His loving tradition of family reunions is legendary and family gatherings for birthdays, holidays, marriages and anniversaries is testimony to his belief in the importance of the family and his faith in god and country. He was a man of few words. He preferred to demonstrate his love for his family and friends through action. He was always there to offer his support and to lend a helping hand to those in need. He never sought recognition for the wonderful things he did for others. He never shirked his responsibilities. He never raised his voice in anger or complained of any hardship. He would say "a man is only as good as his word. When you say something, mean what you say and when you say you are going to do something do it."

Walt is preceded in death by his son, Kevin Barry Duncan; and his daughter, Tammy Lynn Duncan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Jean Helen Duncan of Clinton; his children, Michael Gene Duncan and his wife, Sandra, of Clinton, Daniel Francis Duncan and his wife, Tricia of Terry, Jeanie Marie Munn and her husband, Louie, of Mendenhall, John David Duncan and his wife, Melissa of Ridgeland, and Sheila Dennis Duncan of Atlanta; his grandchildren, Jeremy Duncan of Jackson, Chris Duncan and his wife, Somer, of Clinton, Ryan Channel of Jackson, Jason and Matt Duncan of Byram, Kelli Duncan of Clinton, Joey, Michel and Jake Munn of Hattiesburg, Josh Duncan of Orlando, FL, Jennifer Taylor and her husband, Alan of Atlanta, GA, Greyson and Eric Duncan of Ridgeland, Amanda Roberts of Atlanta, GA, and Lauren Wilkinson of Jackson; his great grandchild, Trace Duncan of Clinton; and his loving sister, Wanda Theresa Duncan and her husband, Floyd of Farmer City, IL.
Walt would not want you to be saddened by his passing. Instead, he would prefer that you remember the time you spent with him and smile and honor him and his memory by sharing your love and generosity with your family and friends.
