US Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 49 th United States Attorney General, during the Administration of President Woodrow Wilson, from 1914 until 1919. Raised by his maternal grandfather following his father’s death and his mother’s mental incapacity, he was brought up under strict discipline and a strong foundation for education. A graduate from Southwestern Presbyterian University in Tennessee, he studied Law at the University of Virginia and later attained his Law degree from the University of Texas. He commenced practicing in Austin, Texas and formed a partnership. He came to prominence when his firm successfully defended the state against a subsidiary of Standard Oil. Gregory served as Assistant City Attorney of Austin, Texas from 1891 to 1894 and began his political career as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1904. In 1912, he campaigned for Woodrow Wilson and due to his assistance Wilson secured Texas’ electoral votes en route to his election as president. In 1914, Gregory succeeded James McReynolds as United States Attorney General when McReynolds moved on to the United States Supreme Court. During his tenure, the American Protective League was established and legislation for the Selective Service was passed, in addition to the passage of the Espionage and Sedition Acts. During World War I, Gregory showed a great distain for those who opposed the America’s involvement. He resigned in 1919 but served as an adviser during the Paris Peace Conference. After leaving the government, he resumed practicing Law. He died of complications from pneumonia while visiting with newly elected Franklin D. Roosevelt.
