Waleska Hellen Powell Westerman, 103, of Nicholasville, KY, and formerly of Radcliff, KY, passed away on Oct. 27, 2023, at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Ky. Waleska was born on June 11, 1920, in Henderson County, KY, the daughter of the late John William Powell and Dora Ellen Melton Powell.

Waleska graduated from Corydon High School, Corydon, KY, in 1938. She attended Murray State College from 1940 through June 22, 1941, when she married Ira J. Westerman, who was enlisted in the United States Army and who was shortly sent to North Africa to fight during World War II. After her children were older, Waleska taught kindergarten for many years in Muldraugh Elementary School, Muldraugh, KY. Waleska came from a family of Methodist ministers and Sunday School teachers and was a long-time active member of Muldraugh United Methodist Church, Muldraugh, KY, and later Radcliff United Methodist Church, Radcliff, KY.

Waleska is survived by her daughter, Loretta Westerman Johnston (Stephen) of Winchester, VA, and sons, Ira John Westerman (Debby) of Wadsworth, OH, and Albert Gene Westerman (Doris) of Wilmore, KY. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Elisabeth Johnston Ross (Scott) of Alexandria, VA, Rudy Westerman of Tallahassee, FL, Timothy Westerman of Wadsworth, OH, Scott Westerman of Akron, OH, Robert Westerman of Warner Robins, GA, and great-grandchildren, Jessica Ross and Andrew Ross of Alexandria, VA. She leaves many wonderful nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 51 years in 1992, her sisters, Edna Powell Westerman, Martha Powell McKown and her brothers, Samuel Powell, William Powell, Comer Powell, Robert Powell Sr., Ralph Powell, and Eugene Powell.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 11:00 AM at the Radcliff United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Jones officiating. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 4-6 PM . The burial will be next to her husband Ira Westerman in Bethany Memorial Cemetery, 10917 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky.
