Carl was the son of Gustave Högberg (Hegberg) and Johanna Johansdotter. Gustave was born 29 Jan 1799 in Äspelunden, Vastra Gotalands, Sweden. Johanna was born 03 March 1804 in Slatthult, Hossna, Sweden.

Carl is shown arriving in New York on 1 July 1869 on the ship the Queen, although he may have been here as early as 1864.

He established an engraving and colortype company in Chicago. His occupation is often listed as "Lithographer". According to his obituary in the Edgewater News (4 August 1931, Chicago, IL) "...he was one of the first engravers to make brass blocks for halftone magazine pictures."

Carl was one of the people who helped rebuild the city after the Great Chicago fire of 1871. He was well known and liked in Chicago, appearing in "The Chicago Blue Book of Selected names of Chicago and Suburban Towns".

Carl M. Hegberg was also a real estate agent for 15 years, last working at this occupation in January of 1911.

He married (1st) Augusta Peterson. Augusta died in 1892, only four days after giving birth to their ninth child.

He married (2nd) Hattie Marie Starr on 3 December 1898 in Chicago. They did not have any children.

When Carl died, he had been a resident of Chicago for over 67 years. He was living at the time at 1967 Leland Avenue. His funeral was held at the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chicago.
