John was a member of Co. A (according to his stone,) 7th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles" lists his residence as Aroostook, Maine. He was 21 years of age at enlistment as a private on September 29, 1863. ("U.S. Civil War Soldiers" and "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles" both list the company he served in as B.) He served as a Substitute in New Hampshire, credited to Laconia. He was discharged from Company B? on December 1, 1864. In the 1850 census, he is 5 and living with his father and mother, Nathaniel (28) and Caroline (23). Both of his parents were born in New Brunswick. Siblings were: William (7), Lydia (2), Baby Bubar (0)

In 1860, the family is in Eaton Plantation, Maine. Children in addition to Oliver were William, Lydia, Abner, Lucy J., Glorianna, and Amanda.

In the 1880 census the family is living in Caribou, Maine. In the 1880 census, Oliver(36)is married to Mary (43.) Children in the home are Sophronia (22), Phebe (20), Ellen (18), Melinda (15), and Richard (14).?

In the 1910 census, John O. is widowed. In his home are his mother Caroline (84) and Lucy A. Dickinson. She was born in Canada in 1854 and immigrated in 1905. In the 1920 census, John O. and Lucy are married.
