Elmer Boden Woodward

Elmer was born 6 Dec 1880 in Huntington, Emery, Utah, the third child of William Andrew Woodward and Mary Emily Guymon. The family lived for awhile in Dry Fork, Uintah, Utah, and later settled in Richfield, Conejos, Colorado. At the age of nine, Elmer lost his mother, and the following year his father married Pleasant Ann Knight. On 16 May 1901, Elmer married Alta Haws McEwan in Uintah County, Utah and to this union were born three daughters; Elma (1902 – 1902), Mary Maleta (1904 – 1930) and Alta Iola (1907 – 1998).

On 12 Sep 1918, Elmer registered for the draft (WWI) while living in Miami, Gila, Arizona. At the time he was employed as a barber and was described as medium build, medium height with brown eyes and black hair. He indicated his nearest relative was Alta H. Woodward living in Provo, Utah. Elmer and Alta later divorced. Although I don't know the date, this indicates they were living apart in 1918. Inscribed at the bottom of his draft registration was, "At present physically disqualified – rheumatism." He signed his name Elmer Bowden Woodward.

I've been unable to locate Elmer in the 1920 Census, but in the 1930 Census, Elmer B and Henrietta J Woodward are living in Prescott, Yavapai, Arizona. Elmer and Henrietta were renting, and he was a proprietor of a pool hall. He and his parents were born in Utah. All the information fits, except he is listed as 29 years of age rather than 49. Henrietta was 40, so likely this was an error on the census. Some time between 1918 and 1930, Elmer remarried.

In a letter dated 27 Oct 1972 from Florence Woodward Swan, Elmer's half-sister, Florence wrote that Elmer died in Prescott, Arizona. No date was given. Arizona Death Certificates online have Elmer Woodward dying on 26 Aug 1937 in Prescott, Arizona. The cause of death was coronary occlusion. The informant was Wesley Harrison and he seemed to have little personal information on Elmer. He gives Elmer's birth as about 1881. However, Elmer's occupation was a barber, the same as on his draft registration. He was living in the Palace Hotel, and Mrs. Henrietta Woodward was listed as his wife. He was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Prescott, Arizona. There's no marker on his grave.

Bio by Marilyn Woodward Blumell - October 2012
Since writing this bio, I've discovered additional information, including another wife named Cora. Once I complete my research, I'll amend Elmer's bio.

Note: There's a number of online family histories indicating Elmer died in 1944. However, the funeral record from the Ruffner Funeral Home, Prescott, AZ, lists Myron Woodward, from Salina, CO as his brother. This establishes the 1937 death date for Elmer as correct. To the best of my knowledge the information I've given in this bio is correct, however, I welcome any corrections or additions or photos that would give a more complete picture of who Elmer was as an individual. I found additional information on Henrietta in the 1940 Census and on Find A Grave.
