Richard Ernest Spies, age 85 of San Antonio died on Saturday, August 4, 2012. He was born August 28, 1926 to Victor and Leona Spies in Yoakum. Survivors: sister, Dorothy Spies Allen of Albuquerque, New Mexico; three nieces and their families: Lynette and Curt Borgfeld, Caitlyn, Kelly and Kevin of Round Rock, Texas, Dana and David Mullen, Daniel and Diana of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nina and Michael Giglio of Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Spies graduated from Yoakum High School in 1943 and worked on a survey crew near Yoakum. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 stationed at Fort Bliss and in Japan. He attained the rank of Corporal. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after many years of faithfully delivering the mail by walking, railway and highway routes. He was an avid stamp collector and an amateur radio operator. He was known for his many volunteer activities including, docent at Institute of Texan Cultures for 30 years and St. Luke's Lutheran Church choir, council and handyman. He was a Boy Scout troop leader in San Antonio and in 1992 received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth from the Alamo Area Council. He most recently attended Gethsemane Lutheran Church in San Antonio.
