Richard "Rich" Donald Brown, 50, passed away on Tuesday, Dec 28, 1999, at his home in Missoula Montana.

Born in Helena Montana October 24, 1949 to Richard and Helen L Brown as a fourth generation native of the Helena area.

Rich graduated from Helena High school in 1967. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. he served in Vietnam with the Marine Corp Air Wing at Chu Lai from 1969-1970. In 1971 he married Polly Hess in Helena.

After his honorable discharge from the USMC in 1970, Rich attended Carroll College in Helena and subsequently worked as a securities examiner in the Montana State Auditor's Office.

In 1979, Rich was elected mayor of Helena when he was 29 years old, the youngest mayor ever elected in Helena.

He served as Helena's mayor from 1980-1982, after which he was appointed the State Director of Montana Veterans Affairs. He directed the division for more than seven years before moving to Missoula in 1989 to accept a position at UM Rural Institute on Disabilities.

During his tenure as Director of Montana Veteran's Affairs, Rich authored a bill to create a Montana Veterans Cementary at Fort Harrison.

Rich also served as the State Director of Montana AFL-CIO Project Challenge from October of 1994 to April 1996, before ill health forced his resignation.

In 1996 Rich moved to Houston to await a heart transplant and underwent a transplant in 1998. He returned to Missoula to live in 1999, where he died as a result of complications stemming from diabetes which was service connected due to Agent Orange.

Rich abiding love for veterans and people with disabilities superceded all other ambitions in his life.
