The son of Andrew & Catherine A. (Snyder) Comrey, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living somewhere in Cumberland County or vicinity, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, October 9, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 26 as a private with Co. I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Cleveland, Tennessee, promoted to corporal April 30, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865. His original enlistment age is on the roster as seventeen, indicating that he likely had parental permission to enlist. He still lied about his age. He was only 16.

After the war, he married Sara Ann Latham and fathered Phebe (b. 10/13/83 - married Ira D. Shoop), Ethel C. (b. 10/??/86), Ethel L. (b. 10/??/86), William A. (b. 06/22/88), Harold (b. 09/??/90), Barlow D. (b. 09/??/94), and Andrew (b. 07/??/97).
