Herb Paine, Switch Foreman, Killed Saturday

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the First Congregational church for Herbert S. Paine, lifelong Brainerd resident who was killed early Saturday morning when he apparently fell from a Northern Pacific switch engine foot board on which he was riding. Mr. Paine was a switch crew foreman with the Northern Pacific.
Mr. Paine, with his switch crew, which included his son Bruce, Ed Elling, engineer, and J.E. Ernst had completed a switch job near Fourth Street and returned to the yard office when Mr. Paine was missed. Bruce, accompanied my members of the crew, and Fred Johns, round house foreman, returned over the route and found Mr. Paine's body near the Sixth street crossing.
Mr. Paine, 61, was born November 27, 1889, in Brained. H was united in marriage to Evelyn Mahood, who survives him. He was a member of the First Congregational church, Aurora Lodge No. 100, A.F. & A.M., the Order of Eastern Star, and the Elks lodge.
Surviving are his widow; one son, Bruce, Brainerd; one brother, George M. Paine, Missoula, Mont.; two sisters, Mrs. Della Shew, Chateau Mont., and Miss Kate Paine, Brainerd; four grandchildren, Judith, Harriet, Jeffrey, and Nancy Paine, all of Brainerd. One son, Donald Paine, a member of the 194th Tank battalion during World War II, died on the Bataan death march. One daughter, Shirley, died in 1926.
Dr. Howard Vernon officiated and interment was in Evergreen cemetery. Masonic services were held.
