CoF 2 Sylvester was a son of Samuel E. Crane and Eleanor J. Dearth. His siblings included William Ambrose, Keturah Jane, Judith Ann, Ruth Alice and Huldah A. Crane.

Sylvester married Sarah Ann Eyer on April 3, 1862. They had a son, Sylvester Crane, Jr., who was born in 1863 and died in 1966.

Sylvester enlisted into the military in Ohio on Oct 8, 1862. He was a Private, in Company F, 2nd Ohio Infantry, Union. Sylvester died on Dec 12, 1862 of febris typhoidis in Nashville, TN.

He was to be interred in Springboro Cemetery (OH., US Soldier Grave Registrations 1804-1958)Son of S. R. & L. J. Aged 21y, 10m, 12d.
